Peter BrĂśtzmann/Paal Nilssen-Love: Woodcuts
August 18, 2010Comments Off
CD and digital is out now!
Smalltown Superjazzz is proud to release the second album from the godfather of European free-jazz, Peter BrĂśtzmann and Norwegian virtuos Paal Nilssen-Love. This is the follow-up to âSweet Sweatâ from 2007. Woodcuts is another free jazz mastodont from the two masters. This is European free-jazz at its best. Recorded live in concert at Kampen in Oslo, Norway. Artwork by Peter BrĂśtzmann in digipack sleeve.
Peter BrĂśtzmann
âVery few musicians in the history of jazz and creative music have created a voice as powerful and distinct as as legendary German saxophonist, Peter BrĂśtzmann. Playing with unyielding conviction, he blows with relentless, brutal passion; an honest and innovative voice during a time of despair, devoid of creative respect and sensitivityâ
(Music and the Creative Spirit).
BrĂśtzmann moved into free playing in the early 60`s, one of the first European saxophonists to do so. He has since become a godfather-figure to more than one generation of free-jazz explorers. His most well known record is the legendary Machine Gun from 1968. An album where BrĂśtzmann played punk rock 10 years before punk rock was invented.
Paal Nilssen-Love:
Paal Nilssen-Love is one of the most respected on the Scandinavian jazz scene, and his percussion skills are simply awsome! He is part of The Thing, Original Silence, Offonoff, Atomic and Scorch Trio (with Raoul BjĂśrkenheim) He has among others played with Joe McPhee, John Butcher, Thurston Moore, Evan Parker, Jim O`Rourke, and Peter BrĂśtzmann to name a few.

Arp: “The Soft Wave” 2010-06-25 11:30:31
Some correspondence over the past week or so regarding The Alps, whose new album I must admit Iâm yet to hear: the last one was pretty cool, something like a kind of psychedelicised Air, if I remember right.
Continued…
During the exchange, though, I was heavily recommending one of the Alpsâ solo project, Arp. Alexis Georgopoulos made an album in 2007 called âIn Lightâ, a terrific early runner in whatâs become a quietly expansive kosmische revival.
Serendipitously, a new Arp album turned up from Smalltown Supersound a couple of days ago, and itâs fantastic, too. While a lot of the more acclaimed artists in this new kosmische/ambient thing seem to have emerged from a noise background and privilege a fair amount of â80s sci-fi chicanery â Iâm thinking specifically Oneohtrix Point Never andEmeralds â Arp are part of a more pastoral wing, whose roots lie deep in the â70s German countryside.
Somewhere near Forst, perhaps, since, crudely, âThe Soft Waveâ runs the whole gamut of influences from Cluster toHarmonia, with a radical departure into the realm of Eno to change things up a little. Itâs not the most original album Iâve heard over the past few months â âFrom A Balcony Overlooking The Seaâ moves beyond being influenced by âAnother Green Worldâ-era Eno, towards a transparent, albeit exquisite, homage.
But it is quite lovely, a meticulous re-realisation of the percolating landscape music that Cluster perfected around âSowiesosoâ, and onwards through Harmonia (âHigh Lifeâ, in particular, has a saturated line that recalls Michael Rotherâs melodic sensibilities, if not explicitly his guitar playing). The odd drift of piano (on âCatch Waveâ, say) also recalls some ofRoedeliusâ later solo work, not least âLustwandelâ, which fortuitously turned up on reissue the other day.
At times, the gentle persistence of this music echoes that of The Alps (âAlfa (Dusted)â in particular). But from the opening and explanatory âPastoral Symphonyâ, this is a real keeper â wouldnât mind hearing the âPastoral Symphonyâ remix byEtienne Jaumet, either.
